From the East

Greetings Brethren:

June was a busy month with several new Entered Apprentice degrees being conferred. Brother Kevin Davidson’s talk on the Holy Saint’s John, and the Eastern Star play by the Worthy Matron and members of Unity Eastern Star Chapter were both well received. Brother Gilberto Rosado along with our stewards are doing a great job cooking our meals prior to our stated meetings. Brother Chris Haught assisted George Mason High School’s Prom Committee by providing his technology expertise to make their prom memorable. Brother Paul Svajdlenka and I were able to assist Ashburn Lodge in a Master Mason degree recently. What great brotherly love we have in Virginia Freemasonry. Thank you to all who attended our youth’s installations in June.

As summer approaches, so does a more relaxed time that we spend with our families and friends. Do feel free to loosen up regarding your dress for the summer months. Remember we only meet on the third Thursday in July and August.

Our July meeting is Crazy Shirt Night, with our Wardens, Brothers David Dodds & John Clair, having their Warden’s Night. A prize will be given for the craziest shirt. We will have “Buy a Bye” Night as part of the Warden’s Night. All officers/members can buy their way out of or into a chair as eligible

Members from other lodges can buy their way into an officer’s chair, as eligible. All money collected will go to the Cherrydale Lodge College Scholarship Fund.

Our August meeting is honoring Past Grand Masters with a talk by
Brother Dick Peppe relating the Shrine to
Freemasonry. Brother Dick has created a special talk for this event.

July 29th – August 1st is the Reid James Simmons Academy of Masonic Leadership at Fork Union Military Academy. This is a tremendous retreat opportunity for all Master Masons to learn a great deal about our fraternity.

Ladies Night is scheduled for September 14th at the Army/Navy Country Club in Arlington. Bring your lady and have some fun adult time. Look for your invitation in the mail and RSVP.

You will also be receiving a reminder regarding the annual Founder’s Night meeting, with a donation request for the Virginia Masonic Home.

Few assets are more valuable to anyone than friends. In Freemasonry, as in the profane world, the art of making friends is encompassed in one phrase: "to have friends we must be friendly." Millions of men are so at heart; cold of exterior from no better cause than shyness. Many a man wants to extend his hand, wishes to say a cheery word of greeting, desires with all his heart to be "one of the fellows" . . . and does not know how.

Yet it is so simple! For the root of personal shyness is fear of laughter--and laughter, like thunder, has yet to hurt anything living! The shy brother need only assure himself: "I will not be afraid of something which cannot hurt me--I will not think my brethren are more critical of me than I am of them--I will not waste time and strength wanting and not doing, when to say a cheery word and put out my hand needs but a muscular effort!"

Friendliness begets friendliness. The brother who is cordial will find hands springing out to meet his; will see smiles begetting smiles; will learn that genuine interest in a brother produces real interest in him.

Please remember that Worshipful John Dudley, Jr. is in Cherrydale Rehabilitation Center and appreciates visitors. If there are other brethren that have cares and concerns please let myself or Worshipful John Frank know so that we may attend to our members and widows.

Thank you to everyone who supports the efforts of Cherrydale Lodge and the 54th Masonic District. Without the efforts of many, our lives would be less enriched.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Carl Lester Garris, III
Worshipful Master
