- 1980 -

         A Stated Communication was held on January 3, 1980. The Master Mason’s Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P. M. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all, thanked them for coming and for their support, after which he asked all citizens of the United States to join in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country.

         The minutes of the Stated Communication of December 20 were sketched for information.

         A new petition was read from Mr. Frank John Apicella, age 32, born May 25, 1947. He resides Cheverly, Maryland and a letter from the Grand Master of Masons in Maryland is in the files waiving Masonic jurisdiction over Mr. Apicella. He is recommended by Brother Erick V. Fritzwolter and Brother W. J. Baird of West Point (N.Y.) Lodge No. 877. The petition was ordered received and to lie over for the statutory period of time. The Worshipful Master appointed a visiting committee consisting of Wor. Forrest R. Nagley, Bros. Ryan E. Souther and Ronald Ashby.

         Notes from several widows, thanking the Lodge for Christmas remembrances were read, as was a note from Bro. Ivan Morrison in Brussels, Belgium.

         It being Masonic Birthday Night, WB’s John R. Conner, Hassan Kiser, Charles Braner, Erskine Stewart and Bros. Frank Marcey, Jr. and Jerre Hansborough, III were greeted at the Altar, invited to the East and congratulated by the Worshipful Master, after which each addressed the Lodge briefly.

         Wor. Charles Strain asked permission to approach the East for the purpose of presenting a Past Master's lapel pin to our Junior Past Master, Wor. Charles Braner, a custom that has been followed by Wor. Bro. Strain for some years.

         Introductions were made of visitors, Cherrydale members, visiting Past Masters. District Deputy Grand Masters, Cherrydale Past Masters, Heads of Appendant Bodies and Grand Lodge Committeemen. WB's Hassan Kiser and William E. Hoy presented WB's Leon Judy, Worshipful Master of Columbia No. 285, Melvin Crane, Worshipful Master of Glebe No. 181, Lewis Wilson, Worshipful Master of Sharon No. 327 and Walter McIntyre, Worshipful Master of Concord No. 307, at the Altar. They were invited to the East, the Lodge was called up and paid them the honors due their high stations. Wor. Bro. Wilson responded briefly on their behalf.

         RW Clive Palmer and Wor. Elmer Wiseman presented RW B. W. McNamee, DDGM of the 54th District at the Altar, where he was greeted by the Worshipful Master. He was invited to the East, the Lodge was called up and paid him the honors due his high station. RW McNamee responded briefly.

         WB's Charles Braner and John Dudley, Jr. presented the speaker for the evening Rev. and Bro. Thomas E. Weir, at the altar. He was invited to the East and warmly applauded, after which he delivered an inspirational address, in which he emphasized the influence of churches and the moral teachings of Masonry as the forces that slow the personal explosiveness and "chip on the shoulder attitudes that divide the people of the world and threaten their extinction.

         Following his address, Bro. Weir was given a stand round of applause and the Worshipful Master presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation.

         No further business remaining to claim the attention of the Brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason’s Lodge was closed in ancient form and harmony at 9:30 P.M.

         A Called Communication was held on January 10, 1980. A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:12 P. M. with Bro. Donald T. Perrine as Senior Deacon and Wor. Charles H. Braner as Junior Deacon.

         The Worshipful Master thanked all for coming and announced that this Communication had been called for work in the First and Second Degrees of Masonry.

         The Master Mason's Lodge was for the present dispensed with and a Lodge on the First degree of Masonry was opened with Wor. Charles Braner as Junior Deacon. Bros. Paul Leroy Andrews and John Kenneth Gott advanced to the altar and were examined on the Entered Apprentice catechism by Bro. James Curtis, after which the Lodge on the First Degree of Masonry was closed and the Master Mason's Lodge resumed labor.

         The ballot was separately circulated and spread to test the Masonic proficiency and moral fitness previous to their being passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. All resulting in their favor, they were declared elected to receive the same.

         The Master Mason's Lodge was again dispensed with and a Lodge on the second degree of Masonry was opened in due and ancient form.

         For Bro. Gott, Wor. Jerry Collins was in the East, Bro. Benjamin Smith in the West, Bro. Ryan Souther in the South; Bro. Vince Blasco was Senior Deacon and Wor. John G. Dudley, Jr. was Junior Deacon. Wor. Forrest Nagley was Chaplain and Bro. Odie Crumpler, Steward.

    For Bro. Andrews, Wor. John R. Conner was in the East, Bro. Smith in the West, Bro. Souther in the South, Bro. James Curtis was Senior Deacon, WB Dudley was Junior Deacon; Bro. Joseph Crane was Chaplain and WB Braner was Steward. Suitable music for the degrees was provided by Bro. James Curtis at the organ.

    The Senior Deacon’s lecture was given by Wor. Forrest R. Nagley and the Middle Chamber lecture by Bro. Benjamin Smith. The Charge was read by WB Charles L. Strain.

    The Lodge on the Second Degree of Masonry was then closed and the Master Mason's Lodge again resumed labor. The Junior Warden thanked all who had participated in the degree work.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the Brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's Lodge was closed in ancient form and harmony at 10:17 P.M.


   A Stated Communication was held on January 17, 1980. A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:31 P. M. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all, thanked them for coming and invited them to join him in the pledge of allegiance to the flag of our country.

    The maturing petition of Mr. James Vincent Sloan was taken up and the ballot being spread and found clear he was declared elected to receive the Entered Apprentice degree.

    Communications were read from Mrs. Sarah Ann Turner, Mrs. Agnes Kelley, Mrs. Edna Garrett, Mrs. Katherine Medford, Mrs. Elsie Briggs and Mrs. Oliver Creekmore, all widows of former Cherrydale members, thanking the Lodge for their Christmas remembrances, and a card from the Entertainment Committee of the Masonic Home, thanking the Lodge for its gift to the Entertainment Fund.

    The bills were read and ordered paid.

    Bro. Ken Hanlon was welcomed back to the Lodge due to an absence for throat surgery.

    It was announced that Bro. Sidney Robin has been appointed to a 3 year term on the Scholarship Committee and will serve as its Chairman; Mrs. Lucille deHaas, another Cherrydale widow, has sent the Lodge a gift of $100 which was ordered covered to the Masonic Home and the Brotherhood Night, an annual event of Masons, Knights of Columbus and B’Nai B’rith, will be on February 13 at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

    The Masonic birthday celebrants who had been recognized at the January 3 Communication were re-called to the East by the Worshipful Master, who presented them with a memento of their Masonic milestones.

    Introductions were made of visitors, Cherrydale members, Past Masters, Grand Lodge Committeemen. At the Altar, WB’s Charles Braner and Elmer Wiseman presented Wor. Louis Wilson, Worshipful Master of Sharon Lodge No. 327. He was invited to the East, the Lodge was called up and paid him the honors due his station. He responded briefly but with sincerity. At the altar WB’s Forrest Nagley and Charles L. Strain presented RW B. W. McNamee, DDGM of the 54th District. He was invited to the East, the Lodge was called up and paid him the honors due his high office.

    At the altar Wor. Bruce Palmer and Bro. Ray Fridley presented the speaker of the evening, Bro. Ramesh Chander, Junior Deacon of Sharon Lodge.

    Bro. Chander was invited to the East and he addressed the Lodge most interestingly on the operations of Masonry in Malaysia. The Grand Lodges of England, Scotland and Ireland govern Malaysian Lodges, where the Lodge furnishings, ritual and procedures are quite different from those in Virginia. After Lodge closing a formal banquet is always held and all Masons, not just officers, are in tuxedos.

    At the conclusion of his direct presentation Bro. Chander answered many questions, following which the Worshipful Master presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation and a memento of the occasion.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the Brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's Lodge was closed at 9:30 P.M.


     A Called Communication was held on January 24, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:05 P. M. The Worshipful Master thanked all for coming and for their support. He announced that this Communication had been called for work in the Entered Apprentice degree.

    The Master Mason's Lodge was for the present dispensed with and a Lodge on the First Degree of Masonry was opened in due and ancient form.

    Mr. Vincent James Sloan was introduced and initiated as an Entered Apprentice.

    Bro. James Curtis was in the East; Bro. Ed James in the West; Bro. Ryan Souther in the South; Wor. John R. Conner was Treasurer; Wor. Erskine Stewart, Secretary; Wor. Charles H. Braner was Senior Deacon; Bro. Vince Blasco, Junior Deacon; Bro. Don Solomon, Steward and Wor. Forrest R. Nagley, Chaplain. The lecture was given by Wor. John R. Conner and the Charge read by Wor. Forrest R. Nagley.

    The Lodge on the First Degree of Masonry was then closed in ancient form and harmony and the Master Mason's Lodge resumed labor. The Junior Warden thanked all for their participation in the degree.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the Brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's Lodge closed in ancient form and harmony at 9:08 P. M.

     A Lodge of Sorrow was convened at the Ives Funeral Home, 2847 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, Va. at 7:30 P.M. to perform the Masonic Chapel Service for our departed Brother, Earl Monroe Davis, who died on January 24, 1980.

    Wor. Jerry S. Collins gave the oration; Bro. Kenneth Cann, Bearer of the Great Light; Wor. John G. Dudley, Jr., Chaplain; Bro. John Darlington of Glebe No. 181, Senior Warden; Wor. Charles H. Braner, Jr. Warden; Bro. Dwight Townsend, Treasurer; Wor. Erskine Stewart, Secretary; Bro. Jack Graves of Glebe No. 181, Senior Deacon; Bro. Jurney R. Guy, Junior Deacon; Bros. Lyman Kisseleff and Ira S. Jump, Stewards; Bro. Dennis Ladd, Marshal and Bro. Anthony J. Pezzella, Sr., Tiler. Also present were Wor. Leon Judy, Worshipful Master of Columbia No. 285; Wor. Arthur R. Wise, Columbia No. 285; Bros. Hugh Ladd and Vince Blasco of Cherrydale.

    At the conclusion of the service the Worshipful Master declared the Lodge of Sorrow for the present dispensed with.


    A Stated Communication was held on February 7, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P. M. After a general welcome to those present the Worshipful Master led the Lodge in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country.

    The maturing petition of Mr. Frank John Apicella was taken up, the ballot spread and found clear, he was declared elected to receive the First Degree in Masonry.

    Communications were read as follows: From MW Charles T. Macdonald, extending greetings to the Lodge; a similar note from Bro. Willard C. Ward in Florida; from Mrs. Juanita Foltz and Mrs. Martha S. Wilson, thanking the Lodge for their Christmas remembrances.

    Routine announcements were made.

    This being Masonic Birthday Night, at the altar Wor. Dale Ireland and Bro. Anthony Pezzella were presented, invited to the East where the Worshipful Master congratulated them and presented them with mementos of the occasion. Each responded briefly. A letter was read from Bro. John L. Sullivan, expressing his regret that he could not be present on his Masonic birthday.

    At their seats the usual introductions were made of Cherrydale members and Past Masters, visiting Past Masters, heads of appendant bodies, Grand Lodge Committeemen, DEO's and DIW's. WB's Braner and Wiseman presented Wor. Louis Wilson, Worshipful Master of Sharon Lodge No. 327, at the altar. The Worshipful Master welcomed him, invited him to the East, called up the Lodge to salute WB Wilson, who then responded briefly. At the Altar RW Hammond Dyer and Wor. E. Hoy presented the DDGM, RW Bruce W. McNamee, who was welcomed by the Worshipful Master. The Lodge was called up to pay RW McNamee the honors due his high station after he had been invited to the East. RW McNamee responded briefly.

    The lodge then proceeded to discuss the resolutions to be considered at the forthcoming meeting of the Grand Lodge. The discussion was led by RW B. W. McNamee, WB's John R. Conner and William E. Hoy, who comprised a Committee appointed to study the resolutions. Following a discussion of each, the Lodge supported the recommendations of the Committee with respect to adopting the proposed resolutions, such recommendations being as follows:

    80-O1 and 80-02, Committee recommended Against passage; 80-03, no objection to; 80-04, no determination reached; 80-05, favored passage; 80-06, no recommenda­tion; 80-07 and 80-08, recommended against; 80-09, favored; 80-10, no recommendation; 80-11 and 80-12, favored adoption; 80-13 and 80-14, recom­mended against; 80-15, judgement reserved; 80-16 and 80-17, recommended against; 80-18, judgement reserved; 80-19, favored; 80-20, no recommendation.

    The Worshipful Master discharged the Committee after thanking its members for their excellent work.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the Brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's Lodge was closed at 9:55 P. M.


    A Stated Communication was held on February 21, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P. M. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all, thanked them for coming and invited all citizens of the United States to join him in the pledge of allegiance to the flag of our country.

    There were no new or mat ring petitions.

    Communications were read as follows: A thank you note from Mrs. Elva Rhoads, one of our widows; invitation to the annual George Washington Masonic service at Arlington United Methodist Church on March 2; notice from Arlington County government concerning 1980 real estate assessment on lodge property and invitation to I.O.J.D. Grand Visitation.

    On motion by the Secretary pro tem, the 1979 and 1980 dues of Bro. Chauncey James Curry were remitted.

    The sick report showed that the Secretary, Wor. Erskine Stewart, is recuperating from flu; that Bro. David Thompson has recently lost his wife and that he is in need of assistance. Wor. Forrest Nagley volunteered to serve as a committee to attend to Bro. Thompson's needs.

    The bills were read and ordered paid.

    At their seats introductions were made of visiting brethren and Cherrydale members w o have not served as Worshipful Masters; visiting Past Masters; heads of appendant bodies, Cherrydale 's Past Masters and the DIW, Wor. Jack Rogers.

    Following routine announcements, certificates of membership in the Grand Master's 100 Club were presented to Bros. Ron Ashby and Tony Pezzella. Wor. John R. Conner, on behalf of Mrs. Bette Ford, widow of our late Wor. Bro. Carl Ford, accepted a certificate purchased in her name by the Cherrydale Players.

    Senior Warden Benjamin Smith reported on the Cherrydale delegation’s attendance at the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Virginia and on the business of that Communication.

    Wor. Charles Braner announced that Cherrydale Lodge received the James Noah Hillman award at Grand Lodge.

    Wor. Forrest Nagley reported on the recent Brotherhood Night joint observance by the Knights of Columbus and B’Nai B’Rith with members of the Masonic order.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the Brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's Lodge was closed in peace and harmony at 9:00 P. M.


     A Stated Communication was held on March 6, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P. M. with Wor. Charles H. Braner as Junior Deacon pro tem. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all and thanked them for coming, after which the pledge of allegiance to the flag of our country was given.

    There were no new or maturing petitions.

    Communications were read as follows: a letter of resignation from Bro. Ed James, our Junior Deacon, due to his moving to Chicago; invitation to the installation ceremonies of John Blair Chapter, Order of Demolay; notice of Arlington Chapter No. 39, OES, Candlelight Ball and, by Wor. John R. Conner, a letter from Mrs. Bette Ford, thanking the Cherrydale Players for their memorial at the Masonic Home in honor of our late Wor. Bro. Carl D. Ford. The Secretary announced to the Lodge that he had had a phone call from an out of town Brother who, in appreciation of the Lodge's help to him in a distressed situation some years ago, wanted to present the Lodge with $150.00 for the discretionary use by the Worshipful Master, whoever he might be, when a Brother is in need of assistance.

    The Secretary moved, and the Lodge approved the motion, that the gift be accepted for that purpose.

    The bills were read and ordered paid.

    It being the Communication for observing Masonic birthdays, the Senior Deacon stationed himself at the altar and presented Brothers J. Barron Nash, Robert Weaver and Dwight Townsend. The Worshipful Master congratu­lated them, invited them to the East and presented them with mementos of the occasion. Each celebrant responded briefly and they were warmly applauded.

    Introductions were made of visitors and Cherrydale members who have not served as Worshipful Master, visiting Past Masters and Past District Deputy Grand Masters, Cherrydale Past Masters, heads of appendant bodies, Grand Lodge Committeemen, DIW's and DEO's. At the altar Wor. Erskine Stewart and Wor. Charles Strain presented WB's Leon Judy, Lewis Wilson and Walter McIntyre, Worshipful Masters of Columbia No. 285, Sharon No. 327 and Concord No. 307, respectively. The Worshipful Master thanked them for coming, invited them to the East, called up the Lodge and paid them the honors due their high stations. WB Wilson responded for them.

    WB's John G. Dudley and Forrest R. Nagley, at the altar, presented the speaker of the evening, RW Reynold J. Mathews, Venerable Master of Alex­andria Scottish Rite and DIW of District 1-A. He was invited to the East, the Lodge was called up and saluted him, after which RW Mathews proceeded to address the Lodge.

    He stated that Scottish Rite Masonry first evolved in Europe and was governed by a 1761 constitution. It first came to New Orleans in 1763. The speaker then gave a chronology of Scottish Rite Masonry in the United States and explained the organization an titles held by its officers. He spoke of freemasonry's survival from anti-Masonic acts that attempted to exterminate the order. In closing he pointed out that enlightened Masons have been among the leaders in every national accomplishment that has had lasting excellence.

    At the conclusion of his remarks, the Worshipful Master presented RW Mathews with a Certificate of Appreciation and a memento of the occasion, after which he was given a standing round of applause.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the Brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's Lodge was closed in peace and harmony at 9:12 P. M.


    A Called Communication was on March 13, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:35 P. M. with Wor. Charles H. Braner as Junior Deacon pro tem. The Worshipful Master thanked all for coming and for their support and announced that this Communication had been called for work in the Entered Apprentice degree.

    The Master Mason's Lodge was for the present dispensed with and a Lodge on the First Degree of Masonry was opened in due and ancient form.

Vince Blasco was Senior Deacon; Wor. John G. Dudley, Junior Deacon; Wor. Charles L. Strain was Steward; Wor. Forrest R. Nagley, Chaplain. During the degree music was provided by Bro. James B. Curtis, organist. The Entered Apprentice lecture was given by Wor. Forrest R. Nagley and the Charge was read by Wor. Charles L. Strain.

    Bro. Apicella was congratulated on taking the first step in Masonry and he was presented a pamphlet explaining the Entered Apprentice degree and was informed of the catechism instructional requirements.

    The Lodge on the First Degree of Masonry was then closed in ancient form and harmony and the Master Mason's Lodge resumed labor.

    The Junior Warden thanked all who had participated in the degree and congratulated them on their work.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the Brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's Lodge was closed in ancient form and harmony at 9:35 P. M.


     A Stated Communication was held on March 20, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7s30 P. M. The Worshipful Master thanked all for coming and for their support after which he led in the pledge of allegiance to the flag of our country.

    There was an alarm at the door and the Worshipful Master was informed that RW Herbert Marion Koehne, District Deputy Grand Master of the 54th Masonic District was in waiting. The Worshipful Master appointed WB’s John Wayne Cross and Jack Rogers as a committee to wait on RW Koehne. Subsequently there was another alarm at the door and the District Deputy Grand Master and his committee entered and proceeded to the altar where he was welcomed and invited to the East. The lodge was called up and paid him the honors due his high station. RW Koehne suggested the lodge complete its business, after which he would speak to the brethren.

    The minutes of the Called Communication of March 13 were sketched.

    Communications were read as follows: A card from RW Carl Comley in Florida; cards of thanks from Mrs. Melvin Hamby for her widow's gift and from Mrs. Evelyn Marcey for the Masonic service for her father, our late Brother Earl Monroe Davis and an invitation from IOJD Bethel No. 35 to their "dippy dinner".

    In consequence of the resignation of Bro. Edward James, whose employment has taken him to Chicago to live, election of a new Junior Deacon was held, required notice of such election having been given. The Worshipful Master appointed WB’s John R. Conner and Elmer Wiseman as tellers and nominated Bro. Harry Slatin for Junior Beacon. WB Luther Farley nominated Bro. Anthony J. Pezzella for the post. In the balloting that followed, 25 ballot's were cast; 13 for Bro. Slatin and 12 for Bro. Pezzella and the Worshipful Master declared Bro. Slatin elected and that he would be installed at the April 3 Stated Communication.

    Following introductions at their seats of Cherrydale members and visitors who have not served as Worshipful Master, visiting Past Masters, Cherrydale Past Masters, Grand Lodge Committeemen, DIW's, DEO's, the Worshipful Master appointed WBs Charles Strain and Elmer Wiseman a committee to present the Worshipful Masters at the altar. They were William Bell of Arlington Centennial No. 81, Lewis Wilson of Sharon No. 327, Walter McIntyre of Concord No. 307, Leon Judy of Columbia No. 285 and Melvin Crane of Glebe No. 181. They were welcomed, invited to the East, the lodge was called up and saluted them. WB Crane responded and they were warmly applauded.

    At the altar WBs Jack Rogers and John R. Conner were a committee to present RW Willard D. Clockhart, District Deputy Grand Master of District 1-A.

    He was invited to the East, the lodge was called up and paid him the honors due his high station. RWB Clockhart responded and was applauded.

    RW Koehne then proceeded to address the lodge, explaining the duties of the District Deputy Grand Master as the representative of the Grand Master. Briefly he outlined the Grand Master's program for the year, emphasizing his deep interest in the Masonic Home and the Statewide Blood Bank. He concluded his address by reciting a poem entitled "The Indispensable Man". The Worshipful Master thanked RW Koehne for his presence and presented him with a memento of the occasion.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the brethren the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's lodge was closed in ancient form and harmony at 9:15 P. M. 


    A Stated Communication was held on April 3, 1980.

    A Master Mason's lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:37 P. M. The Worshipful Master pro tem extended a general greeting to all, thanked them for coming and led in the pledge of allegiance to the flag of our country.

    There were no new or maturing petitions.

    A card from Bro. Ed James was read. Bro. James is in training in Calif­ornia for a new position with his company in Chicago.

    The bills were read and ordered paid, and routine announcements were made.

    The sick report showed the RW Bruce McNamee is now at home following heart surgery.

    It being Senior Warden's Night, Bro. Benjamin Smith was in the East; Bro. Joseph Crane of Columbia No. 285 was in the West; Bro. John Darlington of Glebe No. 181 was in the South; Bro. George Shoemaker of Concord No. 30 was Senior Deacon and Bro. Leonard Pettit of Arlington Centennial was Junior Deacon. All the foregoing are Senior Wardens of their lodges.

    Bro. Shoemaker, Senior Deacon pro tem, presented Bro. Harry Lee Slatin at the altar, where he took the obligation of Junior Deacon of Cherrydale Lodge, administered to him by Bro. Jack Rogers, DIW, who then read the prayer associated with the ceremony. The installing marshal, Wor. Charles L. Strain presented Bro. Slatin in the East for installation, escorted him to his Chair and proclaimed him duly installed, after which Bro. Slatin was warmly applauded.

    As a courtesy to S. L. Collins Lodge No. 396, Toledo, Ohio, Wor. Jack Rogers then conducted the ceremony for awarding the 50-year Veteran's Emblem to Bro. Robert Stewart Jones, who was initiated in July, 1929; passed to Fellowcraft in September, 1929 and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in November, 1929. Bro. Jones addressed the lodge briefly and was applauded.

    The Worshipful Master pro tem then introduced the Senior Wardens at the Chairs and Stations listed above and they were applauded.

    A Stated Communication was held on April 17, 1980.

    A Master Mason's lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:31 P.M. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all present, after which he invited all citizens of the United States to join him in the pledge of allegiance to the flag of our country.

    Communications were read from Bro. Elgin Kirby and Bro. David Walker expressing regret at not being present for their Masonic birthday observance; from Bro. Ed. James, now residing in Chicago; Bro. Mickey Cohen; Bro. David Graham, transmitting the lodge's pro rata share of funds not used for the joint lodge picnic last summer and from the Grand Master concerning chartering of Montross-Landrum Lodge No. 293.

    The sick report showed that Bro. Woody Hayzlett has suffered an angina attack; Mrs. Pezzella, wife of our tiler, will soon enter the hospital for by-pass surgery; Bro. Eric Fritzwolter continues to undergo chemo­therapy treatments and RW Bruce McNamee is recovering nicely from recent surgery.

    The bills were read and ordered paid, after which the lodge was called up for a moment of silence in memory of our late Brother, Wor. John V. Swartz.

    Routine announcements were made concerning activities in Cherrydale and other lodges; the program of the Cherrydale players and Wor. Charles Braner announced the organizational meeting for a new lodge to be located at Dale City, Virginia. Bro. James Pollard gave a brief report on youth activities in northern Virginia.

    At the altar the Senior Deacon presented Brothers James Pollard and Bobby Cohen and escorted them to the East, where the Worshipful Master con­gratulated them on their Masonic birthdays and presented them with mementos of the occasion. Each responded briefly and were warmly applauded. Bro. Cohen, in addition to his own birthday, was stand-in for his son, our Bro. Mickey, whose Masonic birthday was also being observed.

    Introductions were made of visitors and Cherrydale members who had not served as Worshipful Master, visiting Past Masters, Grand Lodge Committee­men, DIW's and DEO's.

    WB Cross then presented certificates to Wor. Jerry Collins, Bro. Benjamin Smith, Bro. Ryan Souther, Wor. Forrest R. Nagley, Bro. Vince Blasco, Bro. John P. Jordan and Wor. John G. Dudley for their attendance at the recent Area Conference.

    Wor. Cross then proceeded to address the lodge on matters within his area of responsibility, after which he was warmly applauded and the Worshipful Master presented him with a memento of the occasion.

    The Master Mason's lodge was then for the present dispensed with and a Lodge on the First Degree of Masonry was opened in due and ancient form for work and instruction. Bro. Vincent James Sloan advanced to the altar and was examined on his Entered Apprentice catechism by Wor. Charles Braner, after which the lodge on the first degree of Masonry was closed in ancient form and harmony and the Master Mason’s Lodge resumed labor. The ballot was then circulated to test the Masonic proficiency and spread to test his moral fitness previous to passing Bro. Sloan to the degree of Fellowcraft. Both resulting in his favor he was declared elected to receive the same.

    The sick report showed that Brother Jurney Guy is in Arlington Hospital with a mild heart attack and Brother Jim Curtis is in Fairfax Hospital for tests.

    A Communication was read from Concord Lodge No. 307, nominating Wor. Harold J. Jennings for District Deputy Grand Master of the 54th Masonic District in 1981 and Wor. William K. McCarty as alternate. Cherrydale members unanimously concurred in the nomination and the Secretary was ordered to so inform Concord lodge.

    The bills were read and ordered paid, following which routine announcements were made of various coming lodge activities.

    Visitors, members, Past Masters, PDDGM's were introduced at their seats and applauded. At the altar WB's John G. Dudley, Jr. and Karl McCormick pre­sented Bro. Lewis J. Wilson, Worshipful Master of Sharon Lodge No. 327. The Worshipful Master greeted him, invited him to the East and called up the lodge to salute WB Wilson, who responded briefly and was applauded.

    Wor. John R. Conner was called to the East to accept a 100 Club Certificate for Arlington Florists, who provide the long stemmed rose for each perform­ance of "A Rose Upon the Altar".

    After the Junior Warden named assignments for the degree to follow, the Master Mason's lodge was for the present dispensed with and, a lodge on the second degree of Masonry was opened for work and instruction. Wor. Charles H. Braner was in the East for the first section and Bro. Benjamin W. Smith for the second section. Bro. Vincent James Sloan was introduced and passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. Wor. Forrest R. Nagley gave the Senior Deacon's lecture and Wor. John R. Conner read the charge.

    Bros. John Gott and Paul Andrews advanced to the altar and were examined on the Fellowcraft catechism by Wor. John R. Conner, after which degree of Masonry was closed and the Master Mason's the lodge on the second lodge resumed labor.

    The ballot was collectively circulated to determine the Masonic proficiency and collectively spread on their moral fitness. Ballots having resulted in their favor, Bros. Gott and Andrews were declared elected to receive the Sublime Degree of Master Mason, which the Worshipful Master announced would take place on May 8, 1980.

    The Junior Warden thanked all who took part in the degree work.

    A Called Communication was held on May 8, 1980.

    A Master Masons lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P. M. The Worshipful Master thanked all for coming and for their support. He announced that this Communication had been called for work in the Master Mason's degree.

    Bro’s. John Kenneth Gott and Paul Leroy Andrews were separately introduced and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason.

    For Bro. Gott, first section, Wor. Virginius Bowen was in the East; Bro. Ryan Souther in the West; Bro. Benjamin Smith in the South; Bro. Vince Blasco was Senior Deacon and Bro.     The Worshipful Master congratulated our two new brethren and instructed them concerning lodge protocol and practices. He presented them with Presentation volumes, signed by those participating in the work and gave them applications for membership in the Masonic Relief Association. Bro. Gott was given a lapel pin, a rare book and other gifts from friends present. On behalf of himself and Bro. Ed James, Bro. Jim Curtis presented both new Masons with lapel pins. Bro’s. Gott and Andrews then spoke briefly to the lodge.

    Communications were read as follows: From Dr. Charles R. Standidge, pastor of Clarendon Baptist Church, inviting Masons to attend that church in a body on Sunday, June 22, that being the day for observing the Feast of St. John; from Bro. George H. Wade announcing a Table Lodge to be held at Springfield No. 217 on June 7; the Grand Master's Proclamation concerning the observance of St. John's Day and letters from two Bethels, IOJD, concerning installation of officers.

    The Worshipful Master asked Wor. Charles H. Braner to approach the East, where he was presented his Past Master's jewel for his service as Worshipful Master in 1979, it being the re-manufactured jewel worn by our late Wor. Bro. Carl D. Ford. Wor. Braner responded briefly and was warmly applauded.

    Wor. John R. Conner reported on two performances by the Cherrydale Players, at lodges in Shadyside and Brunswick, Maryland from which contributions to the Masonic Home of Virginia were derived in the total sum of $233.25.

    Routine announcements were made, principal one of which being that the Bloodmobile would be at Arlington Masonic Temple on May 31.

    Routine introductions were made of Cherrydale members and visitors who have not served as Worshipful Master. At the altar Wor. John R. Conner and Wor. Ernie Moore presented Wor. Bros. Leon Judy, Melvin Crane and Lewis Wilson, Worshipful Masters, respectively, of Columbia No. 285, Glebe No. 181 and Sharon No. 327. They were greeted, and upon being invited to the East, the Lodge was called up to salute them. WB Judy responded for the group and they were warmly applauded. At his request, RW Herb Koehne, DEO of the 54th District was recognized at his seat.

    Prior to these introductions, the Lodge was called up for a moment of silent prayer for our late Brother, Wilmer Joseph Bray, who died on May 8.

    At the altar Wor. Bro’s. Charles Strain and John R. Conner presented the speaker for the evening, Wor. Jack Rogers, DIW of the 54th district. He was escorted to the East and proceeded to address the Lodge. The ritual, he stated, is the vehicle for carrying the largest fraternity in the world. It must be kept pure, he said, that there may be consistency and uniformity among the lodges. Of all the symbols, according to the speaker, the sprig of acacia may be the most important, symbolizing, as it does, the immortality of the soul, that better part of man, which survives the grave. At the conclusion of his address, WB Rogers was given a standing round of applause.

    During the evening's proceedings, WB Luther B. Farley, Sr. was presented at the Altar in observance of his Masonic birthday. He was invited to the East where the Worshipful Master presented him with a memento of the occasion.

    The Worshipful Master congratulated Bro. Sloan and instructed him on the use of the ballot box and on matters of lodge protocol and presented him with a copy of the Cherrydale Lodge history, a Presentation Volume and application for membership in the Masonic Benefit Fund.

    The Secretary read a letter he had received from Bro. Harvey Sloan, grand­father of Bro. Vincent Sloan, and a member of Mankato lodge in Kansas.

    The Worshipful Master read the Grand Lodge resolution concerning new Master Masons and presented him with a Cherrydale glass. Wor. Charles Braner, for himself, presented Bro. Sloan with the bible on which he was obligated and a Masonic lapel pin; on behalf of Mrs. Sloan, a Masonic ring and read a letter from her and, on behalf of Bro. Jim Curtis, a Masonic penny.

    Bro. Sloan then addressed the lodge briefly and was warmly applauded. Bro. Souther thanked all for their participation in the degree work and complimented them on their competency.

    Cherrydale Lodge convened its Lodge of Sorrow at the Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia at 7:30 P. M. on May 29, 1980 to pay the final Masonic respect to Brother Stanton A. Bennett as a courtesy to William M. Perrett Lodge No. 524, Detroit Michigan.

    Brother Jerry S. Collins, Worshipful Master of Cherrydale Lodge, gave the oration. Brother Benjamin W. Smith was Senior Warden; Brother Ryan E. Souther, Junior Warden; Wor. Forrest R. Nagley, Treasurer; Wor. Erskine Stewart, Secretary; Brother Vincent G: Blasco, Senior Deacon; Brother Harry Slatin, Junior Deacon; Worshipful John G. Dudley, Jr., Chaplain; Brother Anthony J. Pezzella, Sr., Tiler; Wor. Charles L. Strain, Marshal and Worshipful Robert E. Moore, Bearer of the Great Light.

    Also present were Worshipful Brothers J. Don Sylvester of Columbia #285, John R. Conner of Cherrydale and Melvin Crane of Glebe #181; Right Worshipful Brothers Herbert M. Koehne, Jr. of Glebe #181 and Jesse D. Powell of Arlington Centennial #81; Wor. Tom Mutchler of Glebe #181 and Brothers Sol Cohen, David Graham and Jack Graves , all of Glebe #181.

    At the conclusion of the service, Wor. Bro. Collins declared the Lodge of Sorrow, for the present dispensed with.

    

     

    A Stated Communication was held on June 5, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P. M. The Worshipful Master, in keeping with an ancient Cherrydale custom, wore the John T. Cochrane hat for this Communication. With Bro. Dennis Ladd as Junior Deacon pro tem at the opening, the Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all, after which he led in the pledge of allegiance to the flag of our country.

    Reading of the minutes of the Stated Communication of May 15 and the Called Communication of May 22 was dispensed with. The minutes of the Lodge of Sorrow of May 29 were read and approved.

    A new petition was read from MR. Thomas Nelson Tully, age 36, by occupation a Museum Specialist employed by Smithsonian Institution.

    He is recommended by Wor. A. Dale Ireland of Cherrydale Lodge No. 42 and Bro. Guy J. Lester, Sr. of Columbia Lodge No. 285. It was received, ordered to lie over for the statutory period and a visiting committee consisting of WB's Erskine Stewart, John G. Dudley, Jr. and Bro. Benjamin W. Smith was appointed.

    A Proclamation by the Grand Master was read, concerning Lodge observation of Independence Day, Law Enforcement Day or Recognition of Civic, Educational or Medical personnel. The Worshipful Master read the letter of resignation as Lodge Secretary from Wor. Stewart and announced election on June 19.

    The sick report showed that RW Hap Offeld is recovering and is back in this area; Bro. Erick V. Fritzwolter continues his battle against cancer; Wor. Bill Hefflebower is at home after a period of hospitalization and Wor. Charles Braner is absent this evening because of serious illness in his family.

    It was announced that the May 31 Bloodmobile collection of 59 pints of blood was quite satisfactory and that Bethel No. 35, IOJD, which meets in Cherrydale Lodge, will have open installation of officers on June 7.

    Following the usual introductions WB's John G. Dudley, Jr. and William E. Hoy, at the altar, presented Bros. Melvin Crane, Lewis Wilson and Leon Judy, Worshipful Masters, respectively, of Glebe No. 181, Sharon No. 327 and Columbia No. 285. Arthur Wise, Jr. presented MWB's­ Stewart Wilson Miner and Thomas Randall Dougherty, Past Grand Masters, respectively of the Grand Lodge of Virginia and New Jersey. The Worship­ful Master welcomed them, invited them to the East, the Lodge was called up and saluted them. Each responded briefly and were warmly applauded.

    At the altar WB's Melvin Crane and Leon Judy presented RW Herbert Marion Koehne, Jr., District Deputy Grand Master of the 54th district. The Worshipful Master welcomed him, invited him to the East, the Lodge was call up and saluted him. RWB Koehne responded briefly and was again applauded.

    At the altar WB John R. Conner and Bro. Linwood Stevens presented WB and Most Excellent George D. Stevens, Past Master of Cherrydale and Frank P. Moncure Lodges and Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons in Virginia. The Worshipful Master welcomed him, invited him to the East, called up the Lodge to salute him. Wor. Bro. Stevens then proceeded to address the Lodge On Royal Arch Masonry, explaining the progression of degrees through Royal Arch Masonry up to the Royal Arch degree, which he characterized as "the summit". At the conclusion of his remarks he was given a standing round of applause.

    Communications were read as follows: From MW Thomas Dougherty, PGM of New Jersey Masons, thanking the lodge for its hospitality on his June 5 visit; a card of thanks from Mrs. Helen Bennett, concerning the courtesy funeral conducted for her late husband last month and a second note from her with which was enclosed a check in the amount of $100 in memory of her late husband. By vote of the lodge the money was ordered to be given to the Masonic Home Endowment Fund in memory of our late Brother, Stanton Bennett.

    Special welcomes were given to Bro. Erick V. Fritzwolter, whose health has not been good recently, and to RW B. W. McNamee, who underwent by-pass surgery some time ago.

    The sick report showed that the wife of Bro. Robinson B. Moore is in ICU at Arlington Hospital; Bro. George Fleming has recovered his health but his wife has been ill and Bro. Pete Kale is now able to be out some.

    WB Forrest R. Nagley reported that the May 31 Bloodmobile registered an efficiency rating of 100%.

    Bro. Vince Blasco was the only Masonic birthday celebrant present. He was ordered to the East, where the Worshipful Master congratulated him and presented him with a memento of the occasion. Bro. Blasco responded with a generous check for the Masonic Home.

    It was announced by the Worshipful Master that the election of a new secretary would not be held this evening but postponed to a future date.

    At the altar RW. Willard D. Flockhart and RW Herbert M. Koehne, DDGM's, respectively, of Districts 1-A and 54. In turn, they were invited to the East, the lodge was called up and saluted them and each responded briefly.

    At the altar WB's Charles Braner and Elmer Wiseman presented the speaker of the evening, RW John C. Parker. He was invited to the East, the lodge was called up and saluted him. RWB Parker then proceeded to address the lodge.

    The principal focus of RWB Parker's address was on the Great Light -the holy bible- which he characterized as "God's handbook for men. He said that all the answers to all of man's problems can be found therein; that it contains all the truths sought by man and that through it man can successfully find his way through life. At the conclusion of his address RWB Parker was given a standing round of applause.

    Following RWB Parker's address, the Worshipful Master called our new Brother, John Gott, to the East for a presentation by Bro. Jim Curtis, consisting of a name badge and miniature working tools.

    A special welcome was given to Wor. George Stevens, Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons in Virginia.

    A stated communication was held on July 17, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:43 P.M. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all and thanked them for coming.

    The Pledge of Allegiance was given to the Flag of our country.

    An alarm at the door announced that MW Charles Edward Wallace, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, was in waiting. The Worshipful Master appointed a committee consisting of RW Herbert Marion Koehne, Jr., Wor. Jack Rogers and Wor. John Wayne Cross, to wait on the Grand Master. A short time later, an alarm at the door announced that the committee had returned with the Grand Master. They were admitted to the Lodge. The Grand Master was welcomed by the Worshipful Master and invited to the East. The Grand Master spoke briefly and then instructed the Worshipful Master to continue the business of the evening. The Grand Master stated that he would have some comments later.

    The maturing petition of Mr. Thomas Nelson Tully was taken up and the ballot being spread and found clear he was declared elected to receive the First Degree in Masonry.

    Communications were read as follows: A letter from the Grand Master announcing a Special Communication of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in the Commonwealth of Virginia on Friday, July 18, 1980, at 7:30 P.M. in the Masonic Temple of Mount Vernon Lodge No. 219, located at 8717 Fort Hunt Road, Mount Vernon, Virginia, for the purpose of instituting Dale City Lodge Under Dispensation. A letter from Brother Ivan James Morrison outlining some of his recent travels and lodge visits in Belgium during the past few months.

    The sick report showed Brother Eric Fritzwolter not feeling well enough to attend Lodge tonight, but he sent his regards; Brother Pete Kale recovering at home; and Brother Woodrow Wilson Hayzlette had another angina attack and is resting at home.

    Brother Benjamin William Smith, Senior Warden, was the only Masonic birthday celebrant present. He was invited to the East, where the Worshipful Master congratulated him and presented him with a memento of the occasion. Brother Smith responded briefly.

    It was announced that Brother Reynolds Trent Harnsberger, a charter member of the Lodge, had died on July 2, 1980. The Lodge was called up for a moment of silent reflection in memory of Brother Harnsberger.

    Introductions were made of visitors and Cherrydale members who have not served as Worshipful Master, visiting Past Masters, Past District Deputy Grand Masters, Cherrydale Past Masters, Grand Lodge Committeemen, District Educational Officers and District Instructors of Work.

    Most Excellent George Derrick Stevens, Grand High Priest of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Virginia, was recognized at his seat.

    The Grand Master assumed the East. A committee consisting of Wor. John Randolph Conner arid E1mer Wilson Wiseman presented the Worshipful Masters at the altar. They were: Wor. Bros. Leon Judy, Columbia 285; Lewis Joseph Wilson, Sharon 327; Houghton Stevens, Freedom 118; Stan Plaugher, Macon Ware 192; and Jerry Shannon Collins, Cherrydale 42. They were welcomed by the Grand Master, invited to the East and saluted. Wor. Brother Wilson responded briefly.

    WR Bruce W. McNamee and Wor. Charles L. Strain presented RW Willard Dean Flockhart, District Deputy Grand Master for District 1A, at the altar. He was invited to the East and saluted. RW Brother Flockhart spoke briefly, thanking the Worshipful Master for the recognition.

    Wor. Jack Rogers and John G. Dudley, Jr., served as a committee to present the Grand Lodge Officers at the altar. They were: RW Reed James Simmons, Grand Lecturer; Cecil Barksdale, Grand Purveyor; Robert C. Coe, Grand Senior Steward; John H. King, Grand Marshall; and Hugh Gudger, Grand Pursuivant. They were invited to the East and saluted. RW Simmons responded, adding that he was present to show the Grand Master that he does attend lodge even if the Grand Master had not been able to locate him recently.

    RW Reed J. Simmons and Charles H. Rowell presented the Past Grand Masters at the altar. They were: MW H. Bruce Green, MW Stewart Wilson Miner, and MW Morris F. Hewitt. MW Brother Hewitt, PGM of Masons in the District of Columbia, responded.

    Wor. Jack Rogers and J. Wayne Cross presented RW Herbert Marion Koehne, Jr., District Deputy Grand Master for the 54th Masonic District, at the altar. He was invited to the East and saluted. RW Koehne spoke briefly, complimenting the Worshipful Master for his performance this year.

    Prior to turning the East over to the Grand Master, the Worshipful Master queried the West, South and brethren. Wor. Forrest R. Nagley announced the next District Bloodmobile was scheduled for September 6, 1980. Brother "Hap" Offield thanked the members of the blood bank for the donations he received during recent surgery.

    The Worshipful Master presented the Grand Master with a "100 Club" Certificate in the Grand Master's name in recognition of the Grand Master's appearance tonight and to further demonstrate the Lodge's history of support to the Masonic Home.

    The Grand Master thanked the Lodge for the generous gift to the Home and urged others present to follow Cherrydale Lodge's example by being generous to the Masonic Home. The Grand Master then addressed the Lodge with his prepared remarks beginning with a caution to all Senior Wardens present to act now to get a copy of the resolutions to be brought before the Grand Lodge in February. He urged them to study the resolutions carefully and not fall into the trap of voting for unworkable ideas or those economically unsound as had been done in recent Grand Lodge sessions. The Grand Master complimented the brethren of Cherrydale Lodge on their work in Freemasonry. He thanked them for the support of his programs this year and charged them to continue the good work, particu­larly support of the Masonic Home. He stressed earning the Jams Noah Hillman award, stating that it is the members of the Lodge who actually earn the award and not the Worshipful Master alone. By earning it, the members win more than just a plaque or medallion - they win the satisfaction of "P.M.A." - Professional Masonic Achievement. The Grand Master ended his remarks by again stressing the need for team work, especially in each Masonic District. He received a standing ovation from the brethren upon completion of his remarks.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the brethren, the Grand Master dispensed with the reading of the minutes, provided that they be approved at the next stated meeting and a copy be sent to the Grand Secretary, and the Master Mason's Lodge was closed in ancient form and harmony at 9:36 P.M. with the Grand Master in the East.


    A stated communication was held on August 21, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P.M. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all and thanked them for coming. He announced that work in the Entered Apprentice degree was scheduled for the evening, after the business was transacted.

    The minutes of the stated communication of July 17, 1980 were read for approval, they having been dispensed with by the Grand Master at that time. They were approved as read.

An invitation to attend the "Grand Lodge of Bath County" on August 23, 1980. An invitation to attend Past Masters' night in Columbia Lodge No. 285 on October 6, 1980. An invitation for the Cherrydale Players to present "A Rose Upon the Altar" in Alexandria Washington Lodge No. 22 on October 16, 1980. A request for a demit from Brother Jack Nicholas Savastone which was ordered granted.

    The sick report showed Brother Ben Smith recovering from a hip operation in George Washington Hospital and Brother Eric V. Fritzwolter II confined to Arlington Hospital.

    The Lodge was called up for a moment of silent reflection for Worshipful Brother Richard Cecil Vingoe, who died on June 16, 1980; and Brother John Leroy Garland, who died on July 22, 1980.

    RW Bruce Winfield McNamee and Brother D. Morton Levy were present to celebrate their Masonic Birthdays. They were presented with a memento of the occasion by the Worshipful Master. They spoke briefly.

    100 Club Certificates were presented to Wor. Charles Lynn Strain and Erskine Stewart and Brothers Kenneth Cann and Vincent Blasco.

    The Master Mason's Lodge was for the present dispensed with and a lodge on the First Degree of Masonry was opened in due and ancient form. Mr. Thomas Nelson Tully was introduced and initiated an Entered Apprentice. RW Charles H. Rowell was in the East. The Lecture was given by Wor. Forrest R. Nagley and the Charge was read by Wor.     The Lodge on the First Degree of Masonry was then closed and the Master Mason's Lodge resumed labor.

    The sick report showed Brother Benjamin W. Smith, Senior Warden, improving at home after hip surgery and Brother Erik V, Fritzwolter continuing to grow more ill.

Nagley reminded the lodge of the 54th Masonic District Blood Mobile scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 1980, and added that the Red Cross had recently informed him that the need is particularly critical at this time. Brother George Gilbreath announced that Arlington Centennial 81 would hold Junior Warden's Night on September 18, 1980. Brother David Graham announced Junior - Warden's Night in Glebe 181 on September 15, 1980. Brother James B. Curtis announced that Junior Warden's Night for Concord 307 was scheduled for September 16, 1980.

He was invited to the East and saluted after which he responded briefly and eloquently. The Junior Wardens were introduced at the stations and places they were occupying and presented with mementos of the occasion.

    Wor. Jerry S. Collins and John G. Dudley, Jr., served as a committee to introduce the speaker of the evening, Brother Wilmer Franklin Bennett. Brother Bennett then addressed the lodge, outlining his Masonic experiences, particularly his visits to Torch Lodge, West Jerusalem, during his two year stay for missionary work in Israel. He pointed out the brotherhood exhibited in Torch Lodge where the membership was made up of several ethic groups - The Worshipful Master and Senior Warden were Jewish, most of the other members were Arabic with a few Gentiles. He described some of the similarities between American Lodges and those in Israel, including much of the ritual. One interesting note mentioned was the fact that three Holy books are present on the altar during the meetings, the Koran, the sacred book of the Moslems; the Torah, the Jewish law; and the King James Bible. He stated that although much of the work (ritual) in the lodge was in Arabic and he could not understand the words, he felt much at home and enjoyed the brotherhood and fellowship. Brother Bennett was given a standing round of applause at the conclusion of his address. After the closing of the Lodge, Brother Bennett presented a moat interesting slide show outlining the building of many of the sacred temples, including King Solomon’s Temple.

The Worshipful Master informed the lodge that the Jobies could not be present tonight as scheduled and that an Entered Apprentice Catechism would be recited later.

A letter from the Grand Secretary relative to the appointment of RW Foyd Wills Sydnor as Deputy Grand Treasurer to fill the vacancy caused by the death of RW J. Walter Ernest. An invitation to attend the installation of officers of John Blair Chapter, Order of Demolay, on September 20, 1980.

    An invitation to attend Masonic Family Night at Arlington Chapter 39, OES, on October 13, l 1980. Notes from RW Carl C. Comley, SR. and Brother Lyman Kisseleff and a thank you from Bethel 35, IOJD, for letting them use the temple.

    The sick report showed Wor. William D. Hefflebower very sick at home; Brother Erik V. Fritzwolter II terminally ill at home and receiving no visitors. Brother Jim Thatcher appears to have suffered a stroke and is convalescing at home. Wor. Jim Thomason is at home recovering from a prostrate operation.

    The Masonic Birthday celebrants, Wor. Forrest R. Nagley, Wor. John G. Dudley, Jr., Wor. William E. Hoy and Brother Harold S. Elsberg, assembled at the altar. They were invited to the East and presented with a momento of the occasion. Each responded briefly.

    Announcements were made as follows: Wor. Forrest R. Nagley reported on the 54th District Blood Mobile on September 6. 47 units were donated and the Red Cross was very satisfied. Wor. John R. Connor gave upcoming performances by Cherrydale Players scheduled for October 16 at Alexandria Washington 22, November 7 at Winchester Commandery #12 and November 21 at Arlington Lodge 102, Bowlers Wharf. The Worshipful Master announced that the DEO school on September 24 would be a School of Enlightenment aimed at Entered Apprentices and that the 54th District Ladies' Night was scheduled for December 12 at the Lazy Susan Dinner Theater to see OKLAHOMA, cost $12.50 per person.

    A motion was made by Wor. John R. Connor to donate Cherrydale Lodge's immediate old officers' aprons to Dale City Lodge U.D, as a token of friendship and support for the new lodge. The motion unanimously carried.

    Wor. Forrest Nagley was presented with a Grand Master's 100 Club Certificate.

    It was announced that Columbia Lodge 285 will hold Past Masters' Night on October 6. The Grand Master will also make his official visit to the lodge that night.

    The Master Mason's Lodge was for the present dispensed with at 8:10 P.M. and a lodge on the First Degree of Masonry opened for work and instruction. The Senior Deacon escorted Brother Thomas Nelson Tully to the altar where he was examined on his Entered Apprentice's catechism by Wor. Forrest R. Nagley. Upon completion, the Lodge on the First Degree of Masonry was closed in ancient form and harmony and the Master Mason's Lodge resumed labor at 8:43 P.M. The ballot was circulated and spread to test the Masonic proficiency and moral fitness of Brother Tulley. Each being clear, he was declared elected to receive the Second Degree in Masonry, which was scheduled for October 9, 1980.

    The sick report showed Brother Ryan Souther, Junior Warden, in George Washington Hospital with possible heart problem. The Worshipful Master welcomed our Senior Warden, Brother Benjamin W. Smith, back from his hip operations. Brother Eric Fritzwolter is in Arlington Hospital and can receive no visitors. Brother Preston Schultz is also in Arlington Hospital suffering from a possible stroke and desires company. Worshipful William D. Hefflebower is in Doctors' Hospital for an operation. Brother Jim Thatcher has been moved to Camelot Nursing Home. Brother Clifford Ellis is ill at home recovering from two strokes and Wor. Jim Thomason is ill at home.

    Wor. John R. Conner moved that Brother Harnsberger’s widow receive a 100 Club Certificate in his honor since he is one of the last remaining charter members of the lodge. The Worshipful Master instructed Wor. Brother Connor to make the arrangements from Cherrydale Players contributions.

    Announcements were made of the 54th District's Ladies Night at the Lazy Susan on December 12th and Bethel 35's spaghetti dinner on October 18th.

    The Senior Deacon escorted the Masonic Birthday celebrants to the altar and then to the East where they received a memento, a glass with appropriate inscription and Masonic emblem, of the occasion. Present were MW Stewart W. Miner, RW Carl C. Comley, Sr., Brother Hugh Ladd and Brother Dennis Ladd. Each spoke briefly of his Masonic experiences.

    The Worshipful Master introduced visitors and members at their seats, calling each by name. Wor. Joseph Harry, Past Master of Columbia 285, was recognized at his seat. Wor. Erskine Stewart and RW Bruce W. McNamee served as a committee to present MW Thomas Randall Dougherty, Past Grand Master of New Jersey, at the altar. He was escorted to the East and saluted. He spoke briefly, commending Cherrydale Lodge and the Cherrydale Players for the fine rendition of the play at Shryock Lodge and stated that he hoped they would continue their fine work.

    The Worshipful Master asked, the Past Masters to assemble at the altar where he introduced each one. They were escorted to the East by the Deacons where the Worshipful Master presented them with a momento of the night, a Past Master's tie clasp. The lodge was called up and they were saluted. Each was given to chance to speak and being Past Masters, none missed the chance. After a lengthy time, they finally finished and were warmly applauded.

    A Called Communication was held on October 9, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P.M. The Worshipful Master thanked all for coming and for their support. He announced that this Communica­tion had been called for work in the Fellowcraft Degree. The Worshipful Master also announced the death of our Marshal, Brother Eric Van Fritzwolter II. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 P.M., Friday, October 10, 1980, at Arlington Funeral Hone. Interment at National Memorial Park at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 11, 1980.

    The Master Mason's Lodge was for the present dispensed with and a Lodge on the Second Degree of Masonry was opened in due and ancient form at 7:45 P.M. and Mr. Thomas Nelson Tully was introduced and passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. Brother Vincent Blasco, Senior Deacon, was in the East, performing the role in an exceptional manner. Other participants were Wor. John R. Connor in the West, Wor. Charles L. Strain in the South, Wor. A. Dale Ireland as Senior Deacon, Brother Harry Slatin as Junior Deacon, Wor. Charles H. Braner as Steward and Wor. John G. Dudley as Chaplain. The Senior Deacon's lecture was given by RW Charles H. Rowell and the Middle Chamber Lecture by Nor. Forrest R. Nagley. The Charge was read by Wor. Strain.

    The Lodge on the Second Degree of Masonry was then closed and the Master Mason's Lodge resumed labor at 9:00 P.M. The Worshipful Master thank all participants in the degree, stating that he was doing so on behalf of the Junior Warden, who was not present because of illness.

    The minutes of the Lodges of Sorrow of October 10 and October 15, 1980, were read for approval.

    The Worshipful master called up the lodge for a moment of silent reflection in memory of two recently departed brothers, Brother Erick Van Fritzwolter II, of this lodge and our Marshal, and Brother Earl J. Ashton, of Germania Lodge No. 722, Rochester, New York.

    There were no new or maturing petitions.

    Communications were read as fellows: An invitation to a turkey dinner by Bethel 38, IOJD, on October 25th at 5:00 P.M. at Oakton Methodist Church.

    The sick report showed Wor. William D. Hefflebower still in Northern Virginia Doctor's Hospital. Brother Joe Mann recently underwent surgery on his neck and is doing well at home. Brother Ryan Souther, our Junior Warden, is still convalescing at home.

    In compliance with the Grand Master's proclamation of May 16, 1980, special recognition was given to civic leaders, educators and law enforcement officers by the Worshipful Master. Present were Wor. John G. Dudley, Jr., Law Enforcement; Brothers Benjamin W. Smith and John K. Gott, educators; and Brother Gary L. Hennig, Navy Department. They were warmly applauded.

    Visitors and members were introduced by the Worshipful Master. He then introduced each Past Master. Wor. Forrest R. Nagley and Erskine Stewart were introduced as Grand Lodge Committeemen. MW Thomas Randall Dougherty, Past Grand Master of Masons in New Jersey, was introduced at his seat at his request.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's Lodge was closed in ancient form and harmony at 8:07 P.M.


     A stated communication was held on November 6, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P.M. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all and thanked them for coming. He especially welcomed our Junior Warden, Brother Ryan E. Souther, back after being ill. The Worshipful Master announced that tonight's meeting had been designated Youth Night and that the Jobies of Bethel 35 would entertain later.

    The Pledge of Allegiance was given to the Flag of our Country.

    There were no new or maturing petitions.

    Communications were read as follows: A letter from the Grand Master announcing that the Grand Lodge will convene at 7:30 P.M., November 11, 1980, to institute Hudson-Morris Lodge Under Dispensation at its temple in King George County. Thank you letters from Germania Lodge 722, Rochester , New York, for conducting Masonic Funeral Rites for Brother Earl J. Ashton, of that lodge, and from Alexandria-Washington Lodge 22 for presenting the play "A Rose Upon The Altar" in that lodge. Thank you notes were received from our widow, Mrs. Patience Fritzwolter for the funeral services conducted for Brother Erick Van Fritzwolter II and for the memorial gift to the Masonic Home in his honor.

    A letter was received from the Masonic Home of Virginia Entertainment Committee requesting a donation. The lodge voted to donate $50.00 to the Entertainment Fund.

    The sick report showed Brother Cliff Ellis confined to Fairfax Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit.

    The Worshipful Master announced that our Brother and Past Master, Wor. William David Hefflebower, had died on November 5, 1980. The lodge was called up for a moment of silent meditation in his memory.

    The Worshipful Master thanked Brother Kenneth Cann for rebinding the Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and other books in the lodge library. He was given a round of applause.

    Wor. Forrest R. Nagley reminded the lodge that the 54th Masonic District will have its next bloodmobile on December 6, 1980.

    The Worshipful Master announced that two vacancies now exist on the Temple Corporation, one created by the death of Brother Fritzwolter and one by the moving from this area by Brother Dwight Townsend. Brother Anthony J. Pezzella was nominated by the Temple Corpora­tion to fill one of these vacancies. He was unanimously elected. The Temple Corporation will submit a nomination for the other vacancy in the near future.

    The Worshipful Master introduced all brethren who had not served as Worshipful Master, addressing each by name. He then introduced all Past Masters and Past District Deputy Grand Masters by name. Grand Lodge Committeemen were introduced. At his request, Brother Thomas Weir, Grand Chaplain, was introduced at his seat. Also at his request, MW Thomas Randall Dougherty, Past Grand Master of Masons in New Jersey, was introduced at his seat.

    No further business remaining to claim the attention of the brethren, the minutes were read and approved and the Master Mason's Lodge was closed in ancient form and harmony at 8:15 P.M.

    After the lodge was closed, the daughters of Bethel 35 were invited in. They then entertained the lodge with a splendid program including several musical numbers and one delightful skit. They were most warmly applauded by the members and presented with a donation to the Bethel from the lodge and with individual momentos by the Worshipful Master. After the program, all retired to the social hall where a pizza feast was enjoyed by all. Part of the pizza had been donated by Brother Robert M. Cohen.


    A called Communication was held on November 13, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:10 P.M. The Worshipful Master thanked all for coming and for their support. He announced that this Communication had been called for work in the Fellowcraft and Master Mason Degrees.

    The Master Mason's lodge was for the present dispensed with and a lodge on the Second Degree of Masonry was opened in due and ancient form. Brother Thomas N. Tully was escorted to the altar by the Senior Deacon and examined on the Fellowcraft Catechism by Wor. Forrest R. Nagley. The lodge on the Second Degree of Masonry was then closed and the Master Mason's Lodge resumed labor. The ballot was first collected on the Masonic Proficiency of Brother Tully and found satisfactory. The ballot was then spread on his moral fitness, and being found clear, Brother Tulley was elected to be raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason.

    Brother Thomas Nelson Tully was introduced and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. R.W. Charles H. Rowell was in the East; Ryan Souther, West; Wor. Dale Ireland, Senior Deacon; Harry Slatin, Junior Deacon; and Wor. Charles Braner Steward. In the Second Section: Wor. John R. Conner was in the East; Jim Curtis, West; Vince Blasco, Senior Deacon; and Wor. Ernie Moore, Junior Deacon. Also participating in the degree were: Wors. Erskine Stewart, William Hoy, Jerry Collins, Charles Strain, Forrest Nagley, and RW Bruce McNamee. The Master Mason's Lecture was given by RW Charles H. Rowell and the Charge was recited from memory by Wor. Forrest Nagley.

    The Worshipful Easter read the Grand Lodge resolution charging Brother Tully to learn the Master Mason's Catechism. He then presented Brother Tully with a petition to the Masonic Benefit Fund, a Presentation volume of Freemasonry, a Cherrydale bulletin, and a "Birthday" glass containing the Masonic Emblem and this years date. Wor. Dale Ireland presented Brother Tully with a Bible that was used this evening and a Masonic ring that Brother Tully's wife asked to be presented. Brother Guy Lester, of Columbia Lodge, presented Brother Tully with a lapel pin. The Worshipful Master then explained the operation of the Ballot Box to Brother Tully. Brother Tully then spoke, thanking the brethren for their attention and help.

    A stated communication was held on November 20, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P.M. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all and thanked them for coming. Brother Thomas Nelson Tully was especially welcomed since this was the first stated communication since he was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on November 13, 1980.

    The Pledge of Allegiance was given to the Flag of our Country.

    The minutes of the Stated Communication of November 6, 1980, and the Called. Communication of November 13, 1980, were dispensed with by the Worshipful Master.

    A petition for degrees was read from Mr. John Leroy Hayhurst, Jr.;51 years of age by occupation a criminal investigator with the U.S. Government. He is recommended by Brothers Robert M. Cohen, of this Lodge, and Robert L. Bateman, of Benjamin Franklin Lodge #52, Orleans, France. The petition was ordered received and to lie over for the statutory period. The Worshipful Master appointed a visiting committee consisting of Wor. John R. Conner, Brother Vincent G. Blasco and Brother James B. Curtis.

    Communications were read as follows: A thank you note from Brother Frank McCall for concern during his recent illness. A notice that the Grand Lodge will convene at 10:30 A.M., November 26, 1980, in the Masonic Temple, 803 Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg, for the purpose of instituting the Edward H. Cann Daylight Lodge under Dispensation. Invitations to attend the installation of officers for Bethel 35, I.O.J.D., on December 6, 1980, and Assembly L.T., International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, on November 23, 1980.

    Announcements were made as follows: Wor. Forrest R. Nagley reminded the brethren of the Bloodmobile on December 6 at the Arlington Masonic Temple. Wor. John R. Conner sought volunteers for the final 1980 presentation of "A Rose Upon The Altar" in Arlington Lodge 102, Millers Tavern, on November 21, 1980.

    Wor. Luther B. Farley, Sr., made a motion to have the Past Masters' jewels now displayed in the lodge secured in the lodge's safe deposit box with the provisions that they could be retrieved and displayed at the prerogative of the Worshipful Master in the future. This motion was made in view of the quickly escalating value of the jewels because of their high gold content. After considerable discussion, the motion passed unanimously. The Worshipful Master ordered the Trustees to handle the transfer of the jewels to the safe deposit box.

    Ten brethren were present to celebrate their Masonic Birthdays. Each was given a Masonic glass by the Worshipful Master and invited to say a few words to the lodge. Each spoke briefly. They were warmly applauded.

    The Worshipful Master introduced visitors and members, Past Masters and Past District Deputy Grand Masters and Grand Lodge Committeemen at their seats.

    At that time, a Lodge Memorial Service was conducted by Wor. Forrest R. Nagley and Charles Strain. Nine Brethren who had died since the last service were memorialized by snuffing a candle and reading of scripture as each one's name, birth date, date of raising and date of death was read. The hymn, "How Great Thou Art", was then sung by the brethren. Wor. John R. Conner joined in the solemnity of the occasion by reciting portions of the Master Mason's lecture dealing with the immortality of the soul. The service was then concluded with a prayer.

    A stated communication was held on December 4, 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 7:30 P.M. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all. A special welcome was given to Brother Ivan J. Morrison, who was back in town on a visit from his assignment in Belgium.

    The Pledge of Allegiance was given to the Flag of our Country.

    Communications were read as follows: Christmas cards from the Grand Master and Brother Vincent J. Sloan; an invitation to attend the installation of officers for Bethel 35, IOJD, on December 6th; and thank you notes from Mrs. Agnes Hefflebower and The Masonic Home Entertainment Fund committee.

    The Worshipful Master presented Grand Master's 100 Club Certificates to Brothers J. Barron Nash and Ivan J. Morrison (2 certificates). They were warmly congratulated by the brethren.

    Announcements were made as follows: Election of officers of Cherrydale Lodge on December 18 with open installation at Cherrydale Methodist Church on December 20th; 54th Masonic District Bloodmobile on December 6th at Arlington Masonic Temple; and a Demolay exemplifica­tion on December 10th at the Alexandria Scottish Rite Temple.

    The Worshipful Master introduced all visitors and members who had not served as Worshipful Master at their seats. They were applauded by the brethren. Cherrydale Past Masters were introduced and they too were warmly applauded. Two Grand Lodge Committeemen were present, Wor. Erskine Stewart and Wor. Forrest R. Nagley.

    Reports by various lodge committee chairmen were then made as follows:

AUDIT COMMITTEE
Senior Warden Benjamin W. Smith reported that the lodge increased its assets by approxi­mately $14,000 during 1980 and briefly touched on other aspects of the report. A motion was made to accept the report and have it spread on the minutes. The motion carried.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
Brother Sidney M. Robin reported that the lodge has $1500 in outstanding loans at present. The Scholarship Fund is quite low and efforts will have to made to build it up since we just received another request for information regarding the loan program.

WIDOWS AND RELIEF COMMITTEE
Worshipful John G. Dudley, Jr. reported that the widows' gifts and Christmas cards are now ready and will be distributed at the next stated meeting for delivery.

BLOOD COMMITTEE
Wor. Forrest R. Nagley reported that 1980 was a most successful year for the blood program. He reminded the brethren of the upcoming blood mobile on December 6th.

CHERRYDALE PLAYERS
Wor. John R. Conner reported that during 1980 the Cherrydale Players had ten performances of "A Rose Upon The Altar" resulting in collections for the Masonic Home of $1,030.21. He announced that he had located the cast of the first performance by the players on July 20, 1965, and that only three of the original cast are still active in the play, Wor. George D. Stevens, Forrest R. Nagley and himself. He thanked all the brethren who took part in the play during the year and mentioned that help that Columbia Lodge has given in filling in at the last minute for regular cast members.

TRUSTEES
The Trustee report showed that the microfilms of the minutes for 1955 and prior are missing from the safe deposit box. Wor. Forrest Nagley will submit a supplemental report by the next stated communication dealing with this. The Worshipful Master directed the Trustees to develop safeguards and procedures to preclude similar problems in the future. It was suggested that a log book be kept in the deposit box and that the bank be requested to be more particular in screening persons for entry into the box. On motion by Brother Nagley, the report was accepted and spread on the minutes.

MASONIC HOME ENDOWMENT
The lodge's Masonic Home Ambassador, Wor. Erskine Stewart reported that during 1980 a total of $5521.71 was contributed to the home by members of the lodge. This computes to a per capita contribution of $16.24, the highest ever by the lodge. This figure should increase when the direct contributions are added later. Upon motion by Wor. Brother Stewart, the report was accepted to be spread on the minutes.

MASONIC EDUCATION
The Lodge Education Officer, Wor. Charles H. Braner, reported that the lodge had satisfied all educational requirements to qualify for the James Noah Hillman Award.

YOUTH COMMITTEE
In the absence of the Chairman, the Worshipful Master briefly outlined the lodge's emphasis on Youth activities this year and congratulated the Jobies of Bethel 35 for the progress made during 1980.

FINANCE COMMITTEE
Wor. Elmer W. Wiseman briefly outlined some recommendations for handling the lodge's assets in the future, particularly the Certificates of Deposit. The Worshipful Master thanked this new committee for the guidance they had provided during the year.

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE
The Entertainment Committee report made by Brother Vincent G. Blasco is spread on the minutes.

HISTORY COMMITTEE
No report was made at this time on the progress of the committee on updating the lodge history.

    At the conclusion of the reports, the Worshipful Master thanked all the committees for their hard work during the year and discharged those whose responsibilities have been fulfilled. The other committee appointments will expire with the installation of the incoming Worshipful Master.

    The maturing petition of John Leroy Hayhurst was postponed until our next Stated Communication because the visiting Committee had not completed its report.

    Communications were read as follows: The sick report showed Worshipful Brother George D. Stevens is in Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, as a result of an automobile accident. Most Worshipful Stewart W. Miner reported on the death of our Past Grand Master Cotton Roden last week. His burial was Monday, December 15. The Wor. Master called the Lodge up for a moment of silent meditation in memory of PGM Roden.

    The WM reminded the Brethren to pick up the Widows' Gifts for delivery. He also thanked Bro. Kenneth W. Cann for his labors on rebinding several more of our library books.

    The Masonic Birthday celebrants were welcomed by the Worshipful Master. Worshipful Bro. Homer Cooper and Bro. Kenneth Cann both responded to the Lodge expressing their feelings about Masonry and Cherrydale Lodge. They were given a gift by the WM and warmly applauded.

    Worshipful Forrest Nagley amended his report as a Trustee that the microfilm not found in the Safe Deposit Box was truly in the Safe Deposit Box, but it was overlooked last month.

    While he was on his feet, Wor. Nagley made a report on the Blood Donations Program. 154 units were collected in 1980 and there are four bloodmobiles scheduled for 1981.

    Worshipful Luther B. Farley, Sr. presented a Resolution to change our By Laws from two Stated Communications per month to one Stated Communication per month. The WM ordered that this Resolution be received and after notification of the members, be taken up for vote.

    Elections: It was announced that Bro. Benjamin W. Smith had Certificate No. 1800. His name being the only one in nomination, he was unanimously elected Worshipful Master.

    The Installation of the above Officers will take place on Saturday, 20 December 1980, at 7:30 p.m., at the Cherrydale United Methodist Church.

    Introductions: Visitors and Members who have not served as Worshipful Master were introduced by the WM at their seats. Visiting PM’s, PDDGM's, who do not hold office or title in Grand Lodge. Cherrydale Past Masters were next introduced at their seats. WB Larry Kidd of Sharon No. 327, was introduced by the Master. Grand Lodge Committeemen, Grand Lodge Representatives, DEO's, DIW's: Wor. Forrest Nagley, Erskine Stewart and Jack Rogers (DIW) were next introduced.

    Worshipful Master Joseph Walden Crane, of Columbia No. 285, was presented at the Altar by Wor. Jack Rogers and RW Bruce W. McNamee. He was escorted to the East where he was given the honors due his station. He spoke briefly and was warmly applauded.

    Wor. Luther Farley nominated Wor. William E. Hoy to succeed himself as Trustee for the next three years and was unanimously elected.

    The WM then proceeded to close his Lodge of Sorrow which was opened last December.

    The WM gave his "swan song" beautifully and is included in the Minutes of this meeting.

    A Called Communication was held on 26 December 1980.

    A Master Mason's Lodge was opened in due and ancient form at 6:00 p.m. The Worshipful Master extended a general greeting to all and thanked them for coming. He announced that this Communication had been called for opening a Lodge of Sorrow and to remain open until closed by order of the Worshipful Master.

     Cherrydale Lodge convened a Lodge of Sorrow at the Arlington Funeral Home, 3901 Fairfax Drive, Arlington, Va., on 26 December 1980 at 7:00 p.m. to perform the final Masonic rites for our departed Brother, Hester C. Mander­son, who died on 23 December 1980.

    Wor. Master Benjamin W. Smith gave the oration; Bro. Robinson B. Moore, Columbia No. 285, bearer of the Great Lights; Wor. Charles L. Strain, Chaplain; Bro. Vincent G. Blasco, S.W., pro tem; Bro.
